Overview

The Lower Omo Valley was declared a World Heritage Site in 1980. It is one of the most important paleontological sites in Africa. It is located in the Omo river valley, in the federated state of Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples of Ethiopia, near Lake Turkana and the border with Kenya.

Departure from Madrid via Rome. in Rome there is a transfer of several hours. We continue the route to Addis Ababa and arrive at an estimated time at 7:00 am. on arrival we apply for a visa. approximately 48€ (50$). Overnight on board.

Arrival in Addis. Pick up at the airport, a brief stop for coffee and visit the new office and transfer by road to Wolayta, Sodo. On the way stop at Tiya stelae field and houses of the Alabans. Overnight at Yakphotel 3*.

Early breakfast in Wolayta and departure to Tarcha. We will arrive at lunch time. On the way we will contemplate the beauty of the landscape and stop to visit some of the houses near the road of the Dawuro ethnic group. Afternoon walk through the village of Tarcha. Overnight in a 3* hotel or similar.

Breakfast and departure to Arbaminch. In the afternoon we make an excursion by car to the mountains of Chencha (3,000 m) where the unique Dorze people live. The vegetation changes and we see bamboo and false banana plants. Their huts are very high with sloping roofs topped on the front in the shape of an elephant's nose or trunk. They are good weavers and farmers and from the trunk of the false banana they extract a paste called "kocho" which is a very important part of their diet. The "kocho" is wrapped in large leaves and fermented for months to make it edible. From these heights there are spectacular views over the Chamo and Abaya lakes. Overnight at Hile Resort Hotel.

After a relaxed breakfast, we will take a boat to navigate the Chamo Lake. Chamo Lake. Lake Chamo is spectacular not only because it is home to the largest crocodiles in Africa but also because of the number of hippos, birds, especially pelicans, the African fish eagle, which can be seen here. Overnight at Hile Resort Hotel.

Early in the morning we will continue on to Jinka. On the way we will visit Konso, known for its elaborate hillside farming terraces, fine cotton weavings, carved wooden totem poles decorating its tombs, and villages protected by elaborate stone walls, the Konso people enjoy the privilege of having been recognized, along with their traditions and territory, as a World Heritage Site since 2011. We continue our tour crossing the land of the Banna tribes, Key Afer (the market place of the Banna tribe) to spend the night in Jinka resort or Nasa (the best possible).

Very early we leave by car to Mursi. We will find out in the Mago National Park and through intricate tracks we will go in search of villages or settlements of the Mursi. The Mursi are one of the most primitive ethnic groups in Africa, they belong to the Surmic group (Nilotic root) and practice a subsistence economy in an inhospitable and virgin area. The men's bodies are covered with paintings, scarifications and beads. Mursi women are known for their lip plates and lobe earrings. Heading towards Turmi, it is the center together with Dimeka of the ethno-cultural group of the Hamer, one of the most important Omotic groups and of great kindness and sympathy. The men wear elaborate hairstyles and the women dress in goatskin dresses. On certain days there are markets in Turmi and Dimeka where, in addition to the Hamer, other inhabitants of the Lower Omo such as the Karo, Arbore, Dassanech come. Overnight at Emerald Lodge.

Breakfast and departure to Dimeka 28 km to visit the hamer market in Dimeka, afternoon at leisure. Overnight at Emerald Lodge.

We will make an excursion of 72 km, to the village of Omorate, next to the Omo River to visit the Dassanetch, also called Geleb. The linguistic root of the Dassanetch is not Omotic but Cushitic and their territory extends on both banks of the Omo up to Lake Turkana. If time permits, we will be able to approach its banks. Return to Turmi for lunch. Overnight at Emerald.

Early breakfast, and we leave by road to Arbaminch via Arbore. Arbore is a small village where the inhabitants are of a specific ethnic group, the Arbore, so it is worth a stop to visit their villages. The section from Turmi to Woyto is one of the most beautiful routes in Ethiopia and worth doing. Overnight at Haile resort hotel.

After breakfast departure to Awassa, the capital of the Nations, Nationalities and Peoples of the South. It is a quiet city with large modern avenues and a beautiful lakeside promenade. Afternoon free to watch the sunset from the Oria of the lake. Overnight at Hotel Lewi resort or Haile resort.

In the morning before leaving, we will visit the fish market, where they sell the night catch of Nile perch or Tilapia and catfish. We continue northward across the great Rift Rift. From here until the Mojo junction the road runs near the Great Lakes. Arrival Addis Ababa and afternoon shopping and rest. In the evening, dinner and party in one of the traditional restaurants of Addis Ababa to taste the variety of Ethiopian cuisine and enjoy a folkloric evening with different ethnic dyes. Overnight at the hotel (best 3*** hotel).

What to pack in your suitcase for Ethiopia?
Compared to the giants of tourism in this part of East Africa, such as Kenya or Tanzania, a trip to Ethiopia is a great option: it is an absolutely wonderful destination.

So get going! Don't waste a second, pack your suitcase as fast as you can and get on the first plane to Addis Ababa. The first thing you should know, although you no doubt already knew this before reading these lines, is that Ethiopia is a tropical country. You'll need to pack light clothing
to withstand the heat and a fleece and a mackintosh. You'll need clothes that cover your arms and legs when visiting religious sites. At night, leave as little skin uncovered as possible, so that you don't get swarmed by mosquitoes. As with any trip to Africa, the first-aid kit should be prepared in detail so that you don't forget to take it with you.
Must be done in detail so as not to forget anything. It will be difficult to find basic medicines in local pharmacies (of good quality). Take remedies for the most common ailments, and don't forget to take enough pills to stop possible diarrhoea, which could spoil your stay, and of course, treatment for malaria. When and where does the tour end?
Your tour will conclude in Addis Abeba Bole International Airport on Day 12th of the trip. There are no activities planned for this day so you're free do anything till the airport chec-in time.
When and where does the tour start?
Day 1 of this tour is an arrivals day, which gives you a chance to board into your minibus and explore Ethiopia. The planned activity for this day is an early welcome meeting at 8am, where you can get to know your guide and driver. Please be aware that the meeting point is at Bole International Airport outside the building where the taxis are.
