1 – The Ethiopian Wolf (Key kebero)

The Simien Mountains are the best place in Ethiopia to spot the majestic and enigmatic Ethiopian Wolf, which is sadly an endangered species due to the expansion of agriculture in the area, with less than 500 surviving in the wild. It is the world’s rarest canid. The wolf is endemic to Ethiopia, so found nowhere else in the world. 

2 – Gelada baboon (Chelada Zinjero)

Another mamal unique to Ethiopia. Bleeding-heart baboon or lion monkey. Geladas are the world’s most terrestrial primates—except for humans. As mostly grass-eaters, they are the last surviving species of ancient grazing primates that were once numerous.

Gelada monkeys live only in the high mountain meadows of Ethiopia—an environment very unlike those of their forest- or savanna-dwelling primate relatives. This high-altitude homeland is replete with steep, rocky cliffs. With their short and stumpy fingers, geladas are adept rock climbers. At night, the animals drop over precipice edges to sleep huddled together on ledges.

3 – Walia Ibex

The Simien is an area of highland country in the northern part of Ethiopia, encompassing much of the eastern part of Amhara region. The word means “north” in Amharic Ethiopia’s official language.In adition to spectacular scenery, the region contains a number of unusual botanical phenomena and some of the rarest animals in the world. Here we have only 5 few reasons why one shoud visit Simien.

4- Geology

The Simien highlands constitute one of the major mountain massif in Africa. The region includes many summits above 4,000 meters and culminates in the highest point in Ethiopia,Ras Dejen, at 4,543 meters, the fourth highest mountain in africa. 

5 – Climate

Visitors to Ethiopia soon discover that climate is not merely an expression of latitude, but also of altitude. The Simien region, though it is on the continent of Africa and not far from the equator , has temperatures which sometimes drop below freezing at night. Hail and snow fall on the highest points and the resulting ice may remain for several days.

6 – Botany

 The visitor to the Simien will pass through three general botanical regions. At the lowest altitude, up to about 2,700-3000 meters, Above this level up to 3,600 meters and still higher, above 3.600 meters, the mountain grassland begins.Only Africa provides an exception to this rules.The mountains of Africa are isolated units rather than connected chains, and they have no contact with temperate regiones.

4 – Wildlife 

 The region is home for the country’s rarest wild animals like Walia Ibex (capra walie), wild goat. Another mammal unique to Ethiopia is Gelada baboon. (theropithecus gelada). these are the last surviving members of the modern day gorillas. Simien fox, Abyssinian wolf (Simenia simensis). It is extremely rare. No other aspect of Ethiopia’s biology typifies its unique situation more than does its bird fauna. 23 species of birds exist nowhere else in the world.

5 – People

The people of the Simien Mountains are very friendly and welcoming. people of the Simien live predominantly by agriculture but many also own some livestock, mainly sheep and goats, but with cattle. Oxen or equids are used as beasts of labour, with horses often used for ploughing.
